Serial murder was initially defined as three or more separate events in three or more separate locations with an emotional cooling-off period between homicides. At a 2005 FBI conference on serial murder, discussion focused on the number of events needed for classification as serial. There was considerable support for reducing the number to two or more events to qualify as serial in nature.
