A STANDARD
SYSTEM FOR INVESTIGATING AND CLASSIFYING VIOLENT CRIMES SECOND EDITION
On May 29, 1980,
in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Vernon Jordan, the president of the National Urban
League, participated in an Urban League meeting at the Marriott Hotel. The
day’s activities were completed, and Jordan spent the evening with one of the
attendees, Martha Coleman. It was around 2:10 A.M. when Coleman brought Jordan
back to the hotel. As Jordan exited Coleman’s vehicle, he was struck once by a
bullet fired from a grassy area approximately 143 feet away. Jordan was one of
the few who survived the offender’s attack.
