On June 15,
1980, Kathleen Mikula, age sixteen, and Arthur Smothers, age twenty-two, were
out for a walk. At 12:14 P.M., they were crossing a bridge on the outskirts of
Johnstown, Ohio, when Smothers was struck down by three shots. Mikula was hit
twice by the same sniper from wooded hill- side 152 feet away. Both died from
their wounds.
