Isolating some of the deaths into singular incidents allowed reasonable medical explanations for the course of events. But many of the deaths posed enigmas: excessive bleeding of unknown etiology, disruptions of the heart rhythm, seizures in children with no previous history of any seizure activity, and sudden respiratory arrests. The administration of San Antonio Medical Center never recognized this compilation of facts as worthy of criminal investigation. The medical examiner was never notified for any of these deaths, even when physicians began sharing the suspicion that nursing mis- adventure was involved.
