Although elder females are the predominant residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities and the victims of sexual assault in those facilities, sexual homicides in that setting are rare. The overwhelming majority of these women had lived in their residences for at least ten years, and many had lived there substantially longer. Unfortunately, this longevity may have produced unrecognized risk to the victim.
