Eugene got along poorly with his five brothers and sisters. He stated that he was the black sheep. His school-related difficulties began as early as the third grade; his earliest memories are of skipping school and vandalizing deserted buildings. Although clearly of average or above-average intelligence, he repeated several grades and eventually dropped out of school before finishing the tenth grade.
